An "embedded system" is generally an electronic system which is microprocessor or microcontroller based, specifically designed  to perform a set of functions in an optimized manner.

Examples of embedded systems are the units mounted in vehicles for engine control or ABS, the control boards of boilers, air conditioners, security systems, etc..

Embedded systems provide greater reliability, real-time performance and lower cost than traditional systems based on PC.
